Six Steps to Clear Communication During a Crisis

Last March, colleges and universities across the nation were jolted into crisis mode. From forced shutdowns to virtual class transitions, leadership teams scrambled to comply with shutdowns; protect students, faculty, and staff; and find a sense of normalcy amid chaos. Leaders and communication professionals are challenged with crafting strategies and messages that resonate with a wide range of audiences, all while keeping readers informed about campus safety, reopening plans, and the value of their product: education. While no crisis manual could have prepared an institution for the pandemic, there are steps leaders can take to help their organizations navigate uncertainty. This session will explore crisis communication challenges and share tactics leaders can use to help stabilize their institutions and mitigate disruption to their programs.
