DHG recently published an article highlighting operational best practice assessments from an outsider's perspective for construction companies. Within the article were some great takeaways. What are a couple takeaways that you had from the article?

Jeff: The article does a great job painting a correlation between a pigtail within the grand foyer of a home that the owners came to live with to that of a company that has set their internal systems and controls but hadn't gone back to assess them. The article provided a great introspective viewpoint into operations within a construction company whether it be in their estimating department, accounting or finance department or another department within the company.

There are a lot of companies that have been great about developing and setting up their internal systems and processes across their different departments, but then turn on cruise control and forget to go back and assess them for effectiveness and efficiency. Maybe it is because of getting caught up in the daily, weekly, monthly hustle and bustle of owning and running a business. Maybe it is because you believe the motto "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Depending on how long it has been since a company last took a step back to assess the systems and processes across their departments, there could be needed revisions or systems or controls that are no longer applicable in today's environment.

Mark: What should a company do if they find themselves in a similar situation or if they want to get more information on an operational best practice assessment?

Jeff: Gaining an experienced perspective from an outside party such as DHG's Construction and Real Estate team can be one example of how a company can gain an independent and valuable perspective into potential operational improvements for their company. If your current CPA isn't adding this value, it might be good to ask them what they see and if they see any potential improvements or efficiencies in your systems and processes.

We at DHG want to help companies evolve and think outside the box.

Mark: Thank you for sharing your takeaways from the article. Check out DHG's construction and real estate team for more information.

Jeff: Absolutely.
