On May 19, 2023, the SEC assembled a host of industry participants and academics for an inaugural conference to discuss emerging trends in asset management. Topics included corporate governance and civic democracy; private funds, investor protections, and industry concentrations; investment complexity and outsourced services; and retail investors, fund trends, and investment innovation. In this article, the conference panelists highlight the complexity of these issues and why there is no clear-cut, simple path forward as the SEC continues deliberations on a record number of proposed rules.
